Changing a tire on major roadways such as the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike can be extremely dangerous.

In Torres Pena v. Gonzalez a motorist was struck while in the process of changing a flat tire on the New Jersey Turnpike by another who allegedly left the scene and was paid a $3.25 million settlement.

A flat tire forced the car driver to pull to the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike in South Brunswick, N.J, in Middlesex County. The car’s driver was standing on the shoulder when a box truck struck and threw him. The truck stopped briefly, left and was later identified based on witness accounts and the New Jersey State Police testing of the truck’s paint, along with the paint on the car driver’s belt.

The car driver sustained five vertebrae fractures, a compound leg fracture and other injuries.
